The history of scientific journals: the first journal of medicine
The first specialized scientific journals on medicine were established in the second half of the 17th century thanks to the development of medical science. Up to this point, essays on methods of treating diseases have been published in general scientific journals. The first medical journal in Russia was the St. Petersburg Medical Bulletin newspaper, published for two years since 1792. The newspaper sought to help doctors exchange experience and information; some of papers were very practical. In addition, it published advice on the treatment and prevention of diseases for a wide range of readers.
Another interesting historical medical publication was the Medical Physics Journal, published under the editorship of doctors I. Vensovich, V. Kotelnitsky and V. Rizenko. The journal contributed to the dissemination of knowledge about medicine and published notes on natural science. However, due to the lack of periodicity, it did not gain popularity among readers and in 1821 the publication of the journal was discontinued.
From 1811 to 1816, the St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy published the General Journal of Medical Science, which was a collection of articles on medicine and served for the exchange of experience between doctors, and also contained practical advices and recommendations for readers.
