Scientific journals in chemistry

Scientific journals in chemistry are designed to help members of the scientific community exchange knowledge, share the results of research work and receive the necessary feedback. Publication of the results of one's research is important to confirm the qualifications of a scientist. Depends on the country, there is an requirement about the amount of papers needs to be published for PhD degree or maintain professor status. So publish articles is important for every scientists. Call for papers is announced by journals regularly.

This is also significant factor for undergraduate and graduate students wishing to continue academic careers. For instance, when you apply for PhD degree, you already need to show your interest in research and some achievement. Having good grades is great, but if you have publiched papers in academic journals, it helps to stand out among other candidates. At this stage it won’t be very important we talk about journal with high or low impact factor. Published paper is good achivement.

Keep in mind that the list of journals in chemistry must comply with a number of requirements, including the frequency of publication of issues, mandatory entry into citation systems and peer review of the publication. Pay attention to impact factor of a journal, but you need to underdtand that journals with high impact factor publish only the most significant and well done research of researchers from the best universities and research centers. Call for papers is announced by academic journals.

What science fields are covered by scientific journals in chemistry

Scientific journals in chemistry cover all areas of modern chemical science, including:

  • General and inorganic chemistry;
  • Bioorganic, organic chemistry and biochemistry;
  • Chemistry of high molecular weight compounds;
  • Colloidal chemistry;
  • Kinetic chemistry;
  • Theoretical foundations of chemical technology.

The history of scientific journals: the first journal in chemistry

Articles devoted to chemical science were published in the first scientific journals. However, the first scientific journals were multidisciplinary and covered all the scientific and medical disciplines existing at that time. One of such academic journal was the Journal of Scientists (Journal de scavans), the first issue of which was published on February 5, 1665 in France.

The first multidisciplinary Russian academic journal to publish articles on chemistry was Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitanae, published from 1728 to 1751 in Latin. Another printed periodical publishing papers on chemistry was the Gornyi Zhurnal.

The first scientific journal dedicated to chemistry was the multidisciplinary The Chemical Journal, published in 1859-1860 with the assistance of N.N. Sokolov and A.N. Engelhardt.

Current trends in chemical scientific journals

The most relevant topics in modern chemistry are research devoted to:

  • modeling of chemical molecules, creation of computer models of molecules, molecular design;
  • nanotechnology, creation of nanostructures and nanotubes, solution ofissues of their practical use, synthesis of fullerenes;
  • femtochemistry;
  • synthesis of polymer semiconductors.

Russian scientific journals in chemistry

Journal of Inorganic Chemistry

This is very respected academic journal in scientific community led by editor-in-chief N.T. Kuznetsov with an impact factor of 1.150. The Journal of Inorganic Chemistry was founded in 1956 and is published to this day.

The publication is included in the recommended list of the Higher Attestation Commission and is included in the RSCI database. The journal publishes articles on the synthesis and properties of inorganic compounds, theoretical chemistry, methodology, physicochemical analysis of inorganic systems, inorganic and nanomaterials. The journal is published with the participation of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Moscow Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry named after N.S. Kurnakov.

The Organic Chemistry Journal

Another significant Russian journal that publishes articles on the chemistry of organic compounds is The Journal of Organic Chemistry. It is published since 1965. Since 1993, there has been a translated version of the publication published in English. The journal is published with the assistance of the Russian Academy of Sciences and covers news, trends and achievements of domestic and world researchers in organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, methods and features of the synthesis of organic compounds. The publication is recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission and is included in the RSCI database.

Petrochemistry

With an impact factor (RSCI) 1.146 - one of the most popular Russian journals devoted to the chemistry of petroleum products. It has been published since 1961. The journal is included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission, Scopus, Web of science and RSCI databases. The journal highlights the results of experimental research and articles about processing of petroleum products, papers devoted to the study of oils and natural gas, methods of processing petroleum products, as well as environmental problems.

One of the most well known and cited journals on chemistry and biochemistry is the American Accounts of Chemical Research, a monthly peer-reviewed publication published by the American Chemical Society. The journal was founded in 1968. The editor-in-chief is Cynthia J. Burrows from the University of Utah. As of 2018, the impact factor of Accounts of Chemical Research is 21.661.

The Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry is a peer-reviewed scientific journal with focus on research work in the field of analytical and bioanalytical chemistry. In addition, on the pages of the journal you can find papers devoted to the development of instruments for mass spectrometry, metallomics, ionics, as well as the analytical characterization of the latest nano- and biomaterials. The journal was first published in 1862 under the name Fresenius' Journal of Analytical Chemistry, however, in 2002 it was renamed and received its current name.

The weekly peer-reviewed publication The Chemical Science covers all aspects of chemical science. It has been published since 2010 by The Royal Society of Chemistry. The editor-in-chief of the journal is Andrew Ian Cooper from the University of Liverpool. The journal publishes articles on organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry.
